Staying Safe During the UK Heatwave When You Have Mobility Issues

The recent UK heatwave has been relentless, and for those living with mobility issues, the hot weather can be more than just uncomfortable—it can create genuine safety concerns.

Reduced mobility can make it harder to cool down, stay hydrated, or move to a cooler part of the house when temperatures rise. Here are some practical ways to stay safe during periods of extreme heat.

Create Your Own Cooling Station

If you use a fan, try placing a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of it. As the air passes over the ice, it can create a cooling effect that’s far more comfortable than a standard fan alone.

Another simple trick is to keep a damp flannel in the fridge and place it on the back of your neck when temperatures become uncomfortable.

Cool Your Feet

If getting in and out of a bath is difficult, a paddling pool or washing-up bowl filled with cool water can be a great alternative. Sitting comfortably and soaking your feet for 10–15 minutes can help lower your body temperature and provide instant relief.

Keep Essential Items Nearby

During a heatwave, the last thing you want is repeated trips around the house. Create a small “heatwave station” beside your chair with water, medication, a phone charger, snacks, and a handheld fan within easy reach.

Take Cooler Showers

A lukewarm shower can help cool your body safely. Avoid very cold water, as it can cause blood vessels to constrict and make it harder for your body to regulate its temperature.

Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

If you begin feeling dizzy, weak, nauseous, or unusually tired, move somewhere cool immediately and drink water. Don’t ignore these symptoms, especially if you live alone.

Is Your Bathroom Working for You?

Hot weather often highlights challenges that are easy to ignore during the rest of the year. Fatigue and dehydration can make stepping into a traditional bath even more difficult and increase the risk of slips or becoming stuck.

Many of our customers tell us the summer months were when they realised their bathroom was no longer supporting their independence.

At AJT Showers, we help people across West Sussex create safer, more accessible bathrooms with walk-in showers and walk-in baths designed to make everyday life easier—whatever the weather.

If you’d like friendly, no-pressure advice, we’d be happy to help. 💙
