Dementia Information
Did you know?
More than half of UK adults know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia and 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. There are 944,000 people with dementia in the UK. This will increase to over one million by 2030 and over 1.6 million by 2050.
Modifying a home and your bathroom to support individuals with dementia involves making the space safer, more intuitive, and less confusing.
Here are some changes and adaptations you can consider:
Colour Contrast and Visual Cues:
Use contrasting colours for walls, floors, and fixtures to help individuals with dementia distinguish different surfaces. Use clear and simple signage with pictures and words to label different areas of the bathroom, such as “Toilet,” “Sink,” and “Shower.”
Non-Slip Flooring:
Install non-slip flooring to prevent slips and falls, which are common concerns for individuals with dementia.
Simplified Fixtures and Bathing Facilities:
Choose faucets, handles, and switches that are easy to use and understand. Lever-style handles are often easier than knobs. Install sturdy grab bars near the toilet, shower, and bathtub to provide support and stability. Replace the bathtub with a walk-in shower or bath to eliminate the need for stepping over a high edge and use a curbless shower entry, reducing the risk of falls.
Anti-Scald Faucets:
Use faucets with anti-scald features to prevent burns from hot water by using thermostatic temperature controls.
Easy-to-Reach Essentials and Lighting:
Arrange towels, soap, and toiletries within easy reach to help individuals with dementia maintain independence during their routine. Install bright, evenly distributed lighting to reduce shadows and enhance visibility possibly using motion-sensored lights when someone enters.
Accessibility:
Ensure that the bathroom is accessible with ample space for mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs.
Consulting with occupational therapists or professionals with experience in dementia care can provide valuable insights into making the bathroom environment safer and more supportive for individuals with dementia, we have met with occupational therapists who provide support to a person’s individual needs, however information regarding signage and home adaptations can be found on the Alzheimer`s Society website at:
