Walk-in Shower or Wet Room: What’s the Difference?

When planning a new bathroom—especially with accessibility in mind—you might come across the terms walk-in shower and wet room. While they may seem similar, there are some key differences to consider when deciding which is right for your needs and space.

What is a Walk-in Shower?
A walk-in shower features a low or level tray and usually has a glass screen to separate the shower area from the rest of the bathroom. It provides easy access without the need to step over a high edge, making it ideal for those with mobility issues. Water drains through the shower tray, and the rest of the bathroom stays dry.

What is a Wet Room?
A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom with no tray or step at all. The floor is gently sloped so that water drains into a concealed drain. There may be a screen to contain splashes, or it may be completely open-plan. Wet rooms are often more spacious and offer a seamless, modern look.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Walk-in Showers are easier to install in most homes and suit smaller bathrooms.
  • Wet Rooms are perfect for open access and are often recommended for wheelchair users or those needing full accessibility.
  • Budget and layout will also influence your decision—wet rooms can be more expensive due to the waterproofing required.

Both options offer style and accessibility. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, mobility needs, and bathroom space.
